According to College Board research, the average four-year degree can add up to $108,584. And that does not even figure in most of the living expenses or entertainment. Thankfully, there are things you can do to save some money here and there. We have five tips to help you manage your college expenses.
- Look for Student Discounts: These can include savings on new and used computers and phones, savings on streaming services, and money-saving offers from restaurants and food delivery options.
- Choose Used Textbooks (or use the library): Buying used textbooks can save you quite a bit of money. Additionally, it may be possible to rent your textbooks from services such as Chegg and VitalSource. Finally, don’t forget to visit your school library. Many will have a copy or two of every textbook.
- Stash Snacks: Trips to a vending machine are expensive. According to Vending How, vending machine prices are often up to 200% more expensive than what you’d pay at a grocery or convenience store. Plan ahead and store snacks for those late-night study sessions. Your budget will thank you.
- Park the Car: If you don’t need a vehicle, don’t bring it with you to school. Even having that car on campus can cost you extra in higher insurance premiums due to the increased likelihood of theft and vandalism. Instead, bike to and from school, work, and internships.
- Use Free Campus Printing and Computers: Sure, having your own computer and printer is nice, but they’re also expensive. Printing what you need with campus printers and using on-campus computers can save you hundreds or even thousands (depending on what you need in computing power and how often you print).
